My mother and I were VERY IMPRESSED OVERALL with the “Green Heron Bed-&-Breakfast” near Grand Rapids in Minnesota!!! To start with, my elderly mother & I wanted to go to Grand Rapids to see the “Judy Garland Museum” for my mother’s birthday so we checked out various places to stay for a couple of nights so that is how we found the “Green Heron B&B” on-line. Neither one of us have ever stayed at a “Bed-&-Breakfast” before so we didn’t know what to expect. When we checked out the website, I had a few initial questions that I couldn’t find on the very informative website so I called up the owners Chris & Johnnie (husband & wife) with my questions – such as there are two rooms, but each room has one bed (King-sized or Queen-sized depending on the room). As much as I love my mother, I wanted my own bed:) Johnnie told me that I could get an additional bed for $25 and the sleeping arrangements would depend on which room you get. The larger Loon room has a full-sized roll-away bed while the smaller Sandpiper room allows guests to use a side room (normally used for guest children) that has twin-sized bunk beds in it. So although we paid extra for the additional bed, Chris is former military so they offer 20% off to fellow veterans (I was in the Navy for six years & my mother is the widow of a retired National Guard veteran). When we arrived, it was VERY BEAUTIFUL OUTSIDE & INSIDE of the “Green Heron”!!! The owners Chris & Johnnie greeted us with their VERY FRIENDLY English Setter (I think) dog named “Jake” as he dropped off his “fish toy” at my mother’s feet:) All of the rooms were VERY GORGEOUS – the Library, the Living Room, the Breakfast/Dining Room, the smaller Sandpiper Room, the larger Loon Room, etc.! Although there’s a patio outside with a view of Pokegama Lake, it was raining off & on during our stay – that is my only negative part of this review – the weather! As far as the “Bed-&-Breakfast” part, I honestly thought it would be a “Continental Breakfast” - you know, the ½ Grapefruit, a muffin, and cold cereal with milk. I was pleasantly surprised with our breakfasts!!! One morning we had a nice fruit bowl and then some tasty oatmeal and the next morning we had a pear with yogurt on it and then some bacon with eggs along with some yummy pancakes with homemade maple syrup! On top of this, for each night that we were there at 5:00 pm, they made us some appetizers (vegetables with hummus dip) in the Library – we weren’t expecting that! We were going out to eat the 2nd night that we were there & asked if we could get the appetizers “to-go” the next morning for our over 100 miles trip back and they said that they would do this for us:) They also packed up some gifts for us to take with (like their unique “Green Heron” carry bag) which was a nice touch! It was a VERY ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE OVERALL!!! Now I just want future guests to be aware of certain things (not “negative” factors, but “awareness” factors) with some already mentioned in the website, but I just want to “reiterate” them: First, there is no A/C anywhere in the place (as mentioned in the website), but the ceiling fans work very well to help keep you cool:) Secondly, there is no TV in the smaller Sandpiper Room, but there is a TV in the larger Loon Room. There IS a TV in the Living Room area – we didn’t go there to watch TV:) Also, there is a dog (as mentioned in the website) that roams about the place – granted, Jake is one of the FRIENDLIEST DOGS that we have ever met, I just wanted guests to know that there IS a dog there (in case the guests have allergies)… Anyhow, if the future guests are aware of these factors and if they are fine with them, then I think that they will be TOTALLY IMPRESSED with the beauty there, the friendliness & hospitality of the owners Chris & Johnnie and their dog Jake, and their overall experience!!! All of this for just over $100 per night (at least for us veterans)!!! We plan on going back in the near future:)

Chris and Johnnie are wonderful hosts - now our friends-- of a simply fabulously peaceful b&b. As repeat visitors we look forward to each and every visit. We enjoy the 5:00 pm appetizers and conversation, tasty breakfast, beautiful lakefront beach and kayaking on Pokegama Lake.

Johnnie and Chris are the perfect hosts for a fantastic Bed & Breakfast experience. They are members of the Minnesota Bed & Breakfast Association and adhere to the required high standards. The beautiful home is surrounded by lush gardens. Having only 2 guest rooms makes for very personal touches including a delightful happy hour on the patio and fantastic breakfast. The lake alive with fantastic wildlife, the use of the wonderful beach and various water toys, and watching the sunset and moon from the dock --- all make for a memorable experience.

We stayed at the Green Heron in June 2015 for our 2nd wedding anniversary. We traveled with another couple and booked both rooms. Our small group still discusses the fun events of the weekend! Despite visiting over a rainy weekend we enjoyed a homemade breakfast, fishing on Pokagama, happy hour while playing a game of scrabble in the 3 season room and relaxing in the living room with board games during a thunderstorm. You won't be disappointed if you chose this location for a weekend retreat!

What a wonderful experience. Johnnie and Chris are such wonderful people and a joy to be around. From the minute we walked in the door we were given a warm welcome, they were so helpful and gracious, and the breakfast was amazing. The location is incredible, right on beautiful Pokagama lake and the rooms overlook the lake and are spacious and cozy. They both have done an amazing job in making the B&B warm and inviting with antique furniture and an open airy living room, which has a wonderful view of the lake and a fireplace to relax around the fire. The minute we pulled into the driveway we went WOW this place is beautiful. Their dog Jake is super friendly and we became best friends immediately. I would recommend the Green Heron to anyone who would like a relaxing getaway.
